Reasons to go old school and buy The Ambassador:1. Rolling Stone calls it “one of the year’s very best albums”2. NPR says it “needs to be heard”3. The booklet will help you determine whether I did in fact sing the words “a cantilevered beach house with clerestory windows” 30 seconds before singing about Bruce Willis’ hair.4. There’s a brilliant/funny/sad/moving essay by architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne in said booklet.
iTunes • Amazon • Bandcamp

I wrote a song inspired by/indebted to The Goldberg Variations for this benefit album produced by Red Hot.
Some folks have requested the lyrics. Here they are:

Some folks have requested the lyrics. Here they are:

the count, he drinks his milk
to help him sleep, to help him sleep
he asked the boy
to play him something sweet
something sweet

they called his teacher
would he write some little episodes?
to while away the night
my eyes don’t close
my eyes don’t close

dear goldberg
the count could be overheard
won’t you play me that same old song?
and he’d recline with a glass of wine
sit back and he’d hum along

dear goldberg
the count could be overheard
do play me that same old song?
and he’d recline with a glass of wine
sit back and he’d hum along

In the darkened tower
In some narrow hour
The count reached out
touched the young man’s
golden hair

With the candle snuffed out
The boy he cries out
Sharp and thin
As the Count comes in

Before the light breaks
he plays again
For his friend

At the morning bell
He swears not to tell
Despite himself
Runs out to the village square

But he kind of liked it
Yes he kind of liked it
Oh Dear God
what’s the rub?

Back in his home
Til the silver gloam
Begins he sits
Practicing the thirty-two chords

But his thoughts are drifitng
as the bass is lifting
toward the tower
and the house of lords

And when the boy returns
The count is weak, the count is weak
He moves his lips and still
He can hardly speak, he can hardly speak

The boy begins to play
the grace the shape the sound the line
And as the form unfolds
The aging count begins to cry

Dear Goldberg
the count could be overheard
won’t you play me that same old song?
and he’d recline with a glass of wine
sit back and he’d hum along

dear goldberg
the count could be overheard
won’t you play me that same old song?
and he’d recline with a glass of wine
sit back and he’d hum along

I recognize that Spotify is here to stay and that many of you are enjoying The Ambassador by that means. But did you know that it takes more than 300 COMPLETE STREAMS of the entire album to equal one CD or iTunes sale? While I expect many of you to continue to listen via streaming services, please consider reinforcing that support through a download — you might not listen to these mp3 files, but your purchase will ensure that I can keep making recorded music. I am a small business owner, and I was proud to be able to employ around twenty-five people, through the support of my record label, in making this album. But if musicians like myself are to continue contributing to the larger economy by making albums, we will require a certain amount of revenue to make that happen. Again — I know that this ship is sailing toward the sea of Spotify, and that nothing will change that. Rather than conceiving of this situation as a binary, where it’s streaming vs. purchases, why don’t we say: listen on Spotify, but support the artists whose music you care about deeply through a purchase. $10 every two or three years will go an awfully long way.
