State of the Union

Dear Citizen,
Tomorrow, Barack Obama will deliver his second State of the Union Address. John Boehner will weep for America and its too-taxed tanning salons. Joe Wilson will erupt in paroxysms of muddled rage. Barry will keep his cool; he will not chide the Roberts court for unraveling the spirit of democracy in this country. He will talk about jobs. He will talk about justice. He will talk about his favorite burger in the DC area. But mostly, he will talk about how he wishes to GOD that he were going to be at Rockwood Music Hall at 1030pm sharp for the post-mortem discussion/cook-a-thon/musico-meanderings of Gabriel Kahane and Rob Moose. Because only at Rockwood Music Hall will there be fair and balanced coverage of No Drama Obama’s speech, replete with interpretive pasta preparation, handcrank pasta machine included. There will be songs about love, songs about addiction, songs about long-forgotten Northeastern townships going going gone to seed. There will be mournful interludes played on a variety of instruments, organic and synthetic. There will be emotions, synthetic and sybaritic. There will be sparkle. There will be tie clips. There will be the perfectly coiffed hair of one young freelance multi-instrumentalist grown tired of constant allusions to his supposed physiognomic antecedent, the Bard of our time, one troubador née R. ZImmerman. He will offer up aphoristic gems of lapidary and laser-like precision, effortlessly poking holes in the veneer and psychic facade of his employer, your narrator, your songwriter, your singer, your man. We do not want you to miss this evening. We commend you for ensuring your place at this table. We will break bread, and we will say, again, there is no god but God.
